KOH SAMET TIME
Koh Samet is located just 200km from Bangkok, in the Gulf of Thailand in rayong province, and is classified as a national park of great natural
beauty.
There are 14 white sand beaches on the island, which are surrounded by colourful coral reefs providing such aquatic sports as swimming,
snorkeling and scuba diving. The most popular beach areas are: Saikaew Beach, Ao Phai and Ao Vong Duan.
The Best time to visit is from October - May. Koh Samet is one of the driest archipelagos in Thailand. Koh Samed gets significantly less rainfall than
Rayong province, even though its only a few kilometres offshore.

NATIONAL PARK INFORMATION
Khao Laem Ya - Mu Ko Samet is a national park maintained and run by the "National Parks of Thailand", There are park rangers
visible on the island, their job is to collect the park entrance fee & look after the up-keep of the island and wildlife protection.
The park rangers offices & park information centres are located on the entrance to Saikaew Beach & Ao Vongduen Beach Area.

PARK ENTRANCE FEE
Koh Samet being a national park, all visitors must pay a "ONCE ONLY" park entrance fee on arrival of 220 Baht per person
Thai Nationals pay 60 Baht per person. Children under 3 years are free - children between 3 - 14 Thai pay 40 Baht - others pay 100 Baht
Adults over 60 years are free.

As of January 2013, the population of Koh Samet was estimated at 2870 residents, consisting mainly of Thai & Cambodian

GETTING AROUND
Koh Samet is approximately 13.1 km2 in size and is shaped somewhat like the letter "T." From North to South the island is 7km in length and
East to west measures 4km's at it's widest point.
The Island has only three roads, One links Saikaew Area with the Northern area of Ao Noi Na, the other,
links Saikaew Area with the East And Southern part of the Island.
Cars are very few, Motorbikes are many and are the best way to explore the Island

SHOPPING
Koh Samet doesn't have much in the way of shopping beyond basic beach accessories (sarongs, t-shirts). The Main street, which leads to nadan
harbour is located in Saikaew Beach, it has the majority of local shops, bars, and internet cafes. There are no markets on Koh Samet


BANKS / ATM'S / MONEY EXCHANGE
There are NO banks on Koh Samet, however there are THIRTEEN ATM machine's, ( PHOTO ) One located on the main street in Saikaew next to the Seven Eleven Supermarket.
One next to Mossman House Guesthouse. One next to the Buddy bar just off Saikaew Beach, One at Saikaew Villa Resort, One located at the Le Blanc Samed Resort Saikaew Beach, & One at Saikaew Beach Resort.
The other Three are located in nadan harbour area. There are two in Ao Vongdeuan Next to the Mini Mart By the Police Station
One Located in Ao Thian Next to the Mini Mart supermarket, & One at Samet Ville Resort in Ao Wai
There are NOT many places to exchange money. **TAKE CASH WITH YOU** (Thai Baht's)


POST OFFICE
The only Post Office is now located in Ao Klang.

The main police station is located on Saikaew main street and is staffed 24 hours, There is also a Police Box located in the resort of Ao Vongduen

HEALTH CENTRE.
The Health centre / Doctor is located on Saikaew main street near to the Police Station, It opens at 08.30 - 12.00 & 13.00 - 16.30

All medical treatment must be paid for in cash and claimed from your insurance company on return.
Keep in mind that the medical emergency services on koh samet are inadequate!!

PHARMACY.
The islands only Pharmacy is located at Samed Plaza on Saikaew Main street next to the 7/11 supermarket
it opens at 10am - 21.00 daily.

CREDIT CARDS
Only large hotel resorts accept credit cards for payments - No Restaurants / No Shops accept them ****TAKE CASH**** (Thai Baht's)


RESTAURANTS / NIGHTLIFE
The majority of restaurants are located on the beach area's (many to choose from), Nightlife on Koh Samet is very low key, being a national park
most beach bars close at midnight, people then move onto the main streets to the small bars located there.

LAUGHING GAS / NITROUS OXIDE - DANGER
Some Nightclubs / Bars, offer laughing gas inhalation as a recreational inhalant "PLEASE NOTE!! THIS CAN KILL". Don't be tempted to try it.


SUN RISE / SUN SET
Koh Samet's location gives it great sun rises, normally at 06.00 & Sun Sets at 18.00. The beaches are quite full with keen photographers
at these times.

KOH SAMET ELECTRICITY / VOLTAGE.
The Electricity supply on Koh Samet is 220v / 50hz -( two pin plug sockets )

MOPED HIRE
Prices vary throughout the resort, most hotel's have motorbike hire for 300 Baht per day ( Quad bikes are NOT available ) should you rent a bike
from the main street, Leaving your passport or a deposit is
not necessary or advisable. There's not much to see on Koh Samet, but it's a great way to
get around. **Please note - most travel insurance companies will NOT pay medical bills for accidents involving motorbikes

DISABLED ACCESS
The Island of Koh Samet may prove very difficult in places, with uneven pavements, sandy and rocky roads, Access on and off boats will also be
difficult. Island resorts DON'T cater for wheelchair users.

There are 14 great beaches to visit, The beach deck chairs are provided free of charge by resorts for guests. Beach Activities are plentyful from boat
trips, fishing, jet ski's and diving. There are two islands located a few kilometers from Koh Samed called Ko Talu and Ko Kud, both are well worth a
trip for diving / snorkeling because of the abundance of marine life such as: turtles and manta rays.

FISHING ON KOH SAMET
Fishing on Koh Samet is a popular pastime, you often see the local residents sitting on the rocky prominences patiently waiting for a bite
no licence or permission is needed, enjoy your catch & have a local beach restaurant cook it for you

Koh Samet, like most Thailand Resorts, has beach sellers, selling goods & services, Bartering is a must.
WARNING "HENNA TATTOO'S" The type of henna used is NOT natural henna, BUT Black Henna which can cause skin burns.

GAY KOH SAMET
There are no gay bars on Koh Samet, although many gays frequent Tubtim Beach area & Silversands Disco particularly
at the weekends

CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR / THAI NEW YEAR (SONGKRAN)
Most resorts offer gala dinners at christmas & new year, these celebrations are normally held on the beach, with live entertainment & firework shows.
Please Note. Gala dinners are compulsory, even if you decided to dine elsewere, you will be charged for this, as it's compulsory!

DAYLIGHT SAVING PROGRAMME
Thailand does NOT have a daylight saving programme, Therefore clocks are NOT altered in March & October.

CAMPING / TENTS
Being a National Park, Camping / Tents are allowed, Pitching your own tent costs 20 Baht per person / per night.
Tent rentals are available for 200 Baht per person / per night, at the main park tourism office, located at the park entrance in Saikaew beach area
And at the park office in Ao Vongdeuan.

LAUNDRY
There are lots of private laundry services offered by locals, they normally charge 50 Baht per kilo of laundry. same day service.

THAI LANTERNS / FIREWORKS
Most evenings on the beaches people gather to light "Thai good luck lanterns" & have small firework displays, these are available for purchase
from the high street shops "Firework safety is a must"

VISA REGULATIONS
All tourists visiting Thailand receive a 30 Day visa stamp in their passport. - Please don't overstay on this visa, go to the local immigration
office the day before it expires and get an extension, it's easy. If you stay longer without permission fines at the airport are very expensive !!!
